National Military Spouse Appreciation Day is celebrated on the Friday before Mother’s Day in May. This year it observed today, Friday, May 10th, 2019.
How It All Started
It was President Ronald Reagan in 1984, who first, at the highest levels, recognized the profound importance of spousal commitment to the readiness and well-being of military members with Proclamation 5184, dated April 17, 1984.
Fifteen years later in 1999, Congress officially made Military Spouse Appreciation Day part of National Military Appreciation Month.
Subsequently, it was the Department of Defense who standardized the date by declaring the Friday before Mother’s Day every year as “Military Spouse Appreciation Day” to show appreciation for the sacrifices of military spouses and therefore gladly honor the contributions and sacrifices made by military spouses.
On a personal note, my wife, of nearly 30 years spent over 14 of those years as a military spouse and I am forever in her gratitude for her support and for keeping our family together through the challenges of a military career. A true silent warrior/hero in my book.
Great Discounts for Military Spouses
1. Disney (Walt Disney World)
Through Disney’s Armed Forces Salute program, military personnel can get up to six yearly discounted tickets to Disney theme parks, as well as discounts off select rooms at Disney Resort hotels. Also, equally fantastic is that these deals are good for military spouses of eligible service members even without the member being present.

Our Featured Shrimp Cacio e Pepe is hard to say but easy to enjoy, which is okay cause we would rather eat it than say it! pic.twitter.com/nB0Aas5JFt

Military cruise deals are another way to enjoy family vacation time at a relatively lower cost thanks to military discounts offered by many them. We are big fans of Disney cruises but I heard the other cruise lines offer great experiences and value as well. Check out the listing below and enjoy your adventure. I highly recommend an Alaska cruise as it was hands-down our best destination cruise thus far.
